Hillside UMC in Duluth, Minnesota seeks to include and to care for people facing memory loss. To express its concern and interest, the church has started offering modified worship services specifically designed for people who have dementia.
The church established a committee to guide this ministry effort. The committee conducted several educational sessions. As a result of these discussions, the building has received several modifications, such as larger signs. “It was really important to our congregation to reach out to members of our own congregation facing dementia issues and also the wider community,” said Rev. Cynthia Coffin-Langdon.
The dementia-friendly services are offered on the third Sunday of every other month at 11 a.m.
